Rangers travelled to play Helston in an eagerly awaited local derby rematch having one the earlier league encounter 4-3. This looked on paper to be one of Rangers possible Banana skins as the league starts to draw to a close.
Rangers playing down hill and into the wind dominated the first half and should have gone into the lead inside 5 minutes but the usually accurate Steve Williams looked out of sorts. Having got in behind the defence he opted to take the shot on early picking out the keeper with ease. To make matters worse two minutes later he got in again only this time he could only craze the bar.
These early misses set the trend for Rangers and as they dominated the half. Chances came and went and came again but they failed to make the most of the opportunities. They nearly paid dearly for their mistakes and have Keeper Andy Wortley in nets to thank for keeping the scores level after Helston broke the offside trap but found the keeper to big to beat.
Rangers pushed Helston back time and time again and eventually Gary Richards managed to get on the score sheet after getting in behind a very tired looking Helston defence. This goal was no more than the Rangers play deserved and it did start to settle the nerves a little.
Now one up Rangers again took the game to Helston and it was Si Hubbard who found the net next and put Rangers two up. This was just reward for their hard work and Helston could have no complaints about the scoreline at this stage. Rangers should have been out of sight at this point and if they had taken half their chances they should have been 5 or 6 up.
In the second half Rangers would be forced to work a little harder than they really wanted and Helston push forward down the hill committing more players forward in search of a way back into the game. This extra effort nearly paid dividends when they were awarded a penalty early on in the half. They however squandered this opportunity as the shot struck the outside of the post.
Rangers eventually wrapped the game up when Shaun WInfield finally managed to beat the offside trap and had no problems in slotting the ball passed the Keeper.
When the whistle blew it was Helston 0 Rangers 3 and no one could argue with the result. This was not one of Rangers best performances but it was another vital 3 pts and takes them 4 clear at the top putting some daylight between themselves and the chasing pack.
